A Call to Womanhood: For Colored Girls Movie Review and Loretta Devine Interview

Picture
Houston Style Magazine Article: www.StyleMagazine.com

Be prepared to experience every emotion possible: anger, happiness, frustration, sadness, and if you’re a woman, a new sense of awareness. Screenwriter and Director Tyler Perry unmistakably reminds society about the struggles that many (not all) black women, or any race of women rather, deals with. Tyler Perry did a pretty good job bringing to light these issues and he did an even better job with choosing an all-star line up of leading actresses: Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Thandie Newton, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, and Tessa Thompson.

My criticisms are not too insulting compared to the not-so-favored reviews that are starting to pour in. Do these critics have a vendetta against Tyler Perry? They must have been hanging out with Spike Lee lately as he is not at all impressed by ANY of Tyler Perry’s movies.  A few feelings that stuck with me as I parted the theatre were: Why are actresses such as Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, and Kimberly Elise always playing the same roles? Janet Jackson is always the successful and powerful woman, Loretta Devine is always the woman with the unfaithful man, and Kimberly Elise consistently plays roles where she’s in an unhealthy or abusive relationship. While their performances were awesome, I would have loved to see these three women play different characters. My biggest criticism comes with the way Janet Jackson’s “situation” ended, which is not at all realistic to how a woman would react in a situation like this.  I expected anger, tears, and fighting, “yes fighting,” but instead I saw a calm and collective woman confront a man about the worst situation a woman could ever deal with.

My emotions towards each character are as follows: Janet Jackson (Jo) didn’t stand out AT ALL, she sort of annoyed me with her emotionless, rude and bitter like attitude; Kimberly Elise (Crystal) angered me, even when she deserved some empathy, I couldn’t muster up the strength to give her any; Whoopi Goldberg (Alice) was crazy—literally,  she had me “shaking my head” at her religious practices; Kerry Washington (Kelly) was actually my favorite character. I felt sorry for her and her situation; Thandie Newton (Tangie) disgusted me and was a mess—a sex crazy mess!; Loretta Devine (Juanita) frustrated me with her forgive a man too many times attitude; Phylicia Rashad (Gilda) didn’t give me any emotion because her role was just a “nosey neighbor;” Anika Noni Rose (Yasmine) had me in tears and her situation both angered and caused me to rethink my dating habits; and Tessa Thompson (Nyla) was too fast for her age but she reminded me of the importance of young ladies needing a female role model in their lives.

All in all, I was pleased and against the other critic’s reviews—I commend Tyler Perry for his work. Isn’t the point of any movie to encourage, enlighten, and entertain the audience? Well I was and the rest of the press seemed to be as well.  I do however suggest that you watch the play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” or familiarize yourself with it on the internet or you’re going to be wondering why in the world they are reciting all of this poetry.

Along with watching an advance screening of the movie, Houston Style got the opportunity to meet with Houston’s own actress, Loretta Devine. She gave her sentiments on the movie and her role as Juanita.

I expressed my “call to action” feeling after the movie was over and Loretta Devine confirmed how my feeling to do so was normal. “These issues have been going on for so long and that is a feeling that you should have. That is why a lot of women are motivated to do all kinds of things that they do.” She says that movies like “For Colored Girls” enables people to talk about things or to see things that they wouldn’t normally discuss. “This movie says a lot to women, it opens up all the issues that women are dealing with,” said Devine.

Loretta Devine also spoke about the powerful influence that the media has, “Pictures are so strong, people decide who and what they’re going to accept and be by watching movies. A movie may be all they needed to get out of a bad relationship or to admit something to themselves that might be life changing.”

I could not hide my frustrated feelings towards the character “Juanita” as we both discussed our views on the many women that we know that are in unhealthy relationships similar to this. Loretta Devine summed her character “Juanita” up by saying, “Everyone knows a woman like my character who knows the guy isn’t acting right. A lot of women are there, the thought of having to start over is so traumatic… Nobody wants to start over; they feel like they’re never going to find anyone.” So I guess that’s the reasoning behind why plenty of women stay with their “rolling stones.”

You can expect to see Loretta Devine in “Jumping the Broom” a TD Jakes movie and also in “Madea’s Big Happy Family” in 2011.

For Colored Girls will make its debut on Friday, November 5th, 2010, and I confidently recommend everyone (male and female) to check out this movie!

Tyson Beckford Host “Make Me a Supermodel” on The Bravo Network

Isn’t it amazing that in America we can be what ever it is our hearts desire. There are no major limitations on the path of life that we choose to live. The Bravo Network is a testimony to this fact with their reality TV series “Make Me a Supermodel” hosted by Model Tyson Beckford and special mentor Aussie Supermodel Nicole Trunfio. Singer Keyshia Cole has a song titled “Make Me Over” with lyrics that sing, “make me over…, make me nice…, and when you’re done…, I want to look right.” This song should be the theme music for Bravo’s hit series because that’s exactly what each of the models/contestants are hoping for.

In its second season, women and men with dreams of being a model but don’t necessarily have the skills and talent to be one, are trained hands on by the best to be the best. When asked what exactly is it that models today are lacking from when Tyson first began modeling, he responded with, “kids are more skinny and don’t really have the personality.” Now I’m not quite sure if the show deals with the touchy subject of being “too skinny” but I do know that from all the wacky and creative challenges, each model wannabe is bound to enhance their personality in some way.

So what exactly does it take to be a model? I’m sure height and weight are number one and two on the list, but what else does it take? “You need ex-factor, a nature of confidence, inner beauty, outer beauty, all those things boiled into one,” said Nicole Trunfio. We’re on the same page. Whether you’re into modeling, pageantry or anything else that involves your physical features, you have to make yourself stand out some how, because everyone is beautiful in some way. What sets you apart from others? Is it your walk; is it the look of confidence on your face; your great posture that screams look at me? Tyson says that for the men, it’s your swagger. “Swagger separates you from the average guy. If you have swagger you can go into anything from a board meeting to football tryouts, or auditions and win.”

Tyson even gave some good advice as to what it takes to be a black model. “It’s hard for us as black models. We’re in a white industry so we have to work twice as hard. We get called in on the same castings as every one else but our books have to be twice as great. It takes a lot of heart and soul. You also have to have a good agent to push your look. They have to see something different in you, something that sets you apart from your white peers.”

For all of you who have aspirations to be a model, my advice for you would be to remain true to yourself. The key word in this interview, for the show, and even in life is about being different. We all are different but we sometimes get caught up into wanting to be like her, or being like him and then we loose our identity.

The second season of “Make Me a Supermodel” debuts on Wednesday, March 4th at 10/9c on the Bravo Network.

It’s ladies night out and you, your best of friends, and past college roomies have decided to paint the town like you used to. Your hair looks stunning, you’ve freshened yourself up, and stepped into your sexy-little-black-strapless mini, however you can’t stop looking in the mirror at the visible bulge—that no matter how hard you suck it in— is still evidently there; and the strapless bra that you’ve paid an excessive amount of money for is not doing the justice that it promised it would.

What do you do? Well, in spite of surgery, there are plenty of other options; one happens to be Dr. Rey’s Shapewear. Consider these items plastic surgery with out the pain and the large amount of debt. With Dr. Rey’s impressive vision for results and Designer Bruno’s expertise in fashion and design— I think we have a winner in this collection, ladies. “Never in the history of shapewear, anywhere in the world, has a plastic surgeon and a designer combined their secrets together to launch the perfect shapewear garment. I know the secrets of how you want to feel and Dr. Rey has the secrets of how he makes you look.” says Designer Bruno.

Considering shapewear is so popular these days— buy this and try this; slimmer you; sleek physique; who knows which items to consider and which ones to stay clear from. Well since I’ve had the pleasure of trying out some of these products, let me be the first to say I am pleased with my results from the Dr. Rey’s Shapewear collection. The Diamond-Pattern Balconette Bra that I am wearing right now has given me an instant 400 CC breast augmentation. The most amazing thing about the bra is I can’t even tell that I have one on; it’s like having a second layer of skin—literally. The fabric and design that Designer Bruno has constructed together is perfect; I dare you to try it. “I took Dr. Rey’s key surgeon techniques and combined them with amazing fabrics such as aloe vera fabric; fabrics that are enriched in aloe vera and basically when worn, they’re nice and soft,” says Bruno. “We wanted to make sure that you feel comfortable when you’re wearing it but still achieving the results.”

I also had the pleasure of wearing the High-Waist Diamond G-string. This item is perfect for all occasions: strapless dresses, skirts, and even jeans, it’s practically seamless. There is no excuse why you shouldn’t have an item or two from this collection in your closet; unless you already have the perfect body. Fashion in the Workplace

Houston Style Magazine Article

We’ve come a long way from our black suit and white shirt days; our stockings and closed toe work heels. Thank goodness for this evolution because fashion does have room in the work place. You can still wear your reds, yellows, and greens, with out crossing the professional borderline. Some may argue with this fashion phenomenon and although it can vary by your field; CEO’s, CPA’s, secretaries, personal assistants, editors and etc., there are many ways to sneak some color, trends, and style into your work wardrobe.

Tip #1 Color: The most professional way to go about adding color to your outfit is to make sure that you stick wit the basic undertone colors; such as brown and tan, all black, black and grey, even the traditional black and white can be a good combo of basic undertone colors. You then choose one article to be the accent color. For example: Brown wide leg slacks, a tan silk blouse, and a purple sweater; black pencil skirt with a 2 inch partial split or less, a white button up collar shirt, and a light green blazer; a black and grey pattern dress with a royal blue cardigan; or a black pair of slacks, a black turtleneck and a red vest. Another fun way to go about adding life to your attire is to use articles with patterns. Flowers, stripes, and flannel prints can all add a dab of pizzazz to your look.

Tip #2 Cut: Choosing the right cut is important. Most people naturally want to run to the straight leg pants, simple sweaters, and button ups.  Using different cuts can be fun and can transform an ordinary article into a runway outfit. Great cuts for pants are wide legged, and cropped; skirt cuts are pleaded and pencil; shirt cuts are ruffled, and bubble sleeve.

Tip #3 Accessories: Two simple words for choosing your accessories—have fun. Your accessories can still be fun and trendy for the workplace. Just try not to overdue it, when you’re giving a speech or a presentation and every one is focusing on your larger than life jewelry. Pearls, studs, and diamonds can be purchased in different colors, sizes, and even with extra designs surrounding them. Chandelier and hoop earrings can be worn as well, with some caution. Beware of large hoops and chandelier earrings that hang almost to your shoulders. Keep the sizes dainty and petite. Necklaces and bracelets are not mandatory and can be eliminated some of the time, but if you are choosing to where them, keep them petite and dainty as well. If you are going to wear bangles, make sure to wear no more than two, to eliminate the sounds of them jingling together.

When in doubt about what colors go good together, or what accessories or cuts to buy, look to your everyday fashion magazines. Pay attention to the style and creativity of the models and use that as a format to incorporate your own style.

Perfect Eyebrows Created by You

Houston Style Magazine Article

Have you been taking care of majority of your beauty needs at home, due to the ever-changing economy? Well I have. I’ve mastered the art of being my own nail tech, beautician, and I even do my own waxing. No wonder why eyebrow extraordinaire Anastasia’s products are so popular. She has created a way for us to master the art of creating beautiful eyebrows at home.

“You should take care of your eyebrows the way you take care of you lashes,” says Anastasia. Her hands-on easy to use eyebrow collection allows everyone to enjoy the great custom look of perfectly styled eyebrows. Yes perfect eyebrows are styled, and I couldn’t agree with Anastasia more when she said, “You change your entire look by shaping correctly your eyebrows.” Believe it or not but I get a boost of confidence every time my eyebrows are freshly styled.

“I love to make women beautiful,” Anastasia added, which inclines me to want to use her products more because of the passion that’s involved in the creation. Moving to America nineteen years ago from Romania, Anastasia has since then attended beauty school and began her extensive research on different bone structures and eyebrow shapes, to achieve the overall perfect eyebrow shape for all individuals. After devoting five years to working as an esthetician and compiling research, Anastasia opened up her own salon in Beverly Hills. Fast-forwarding to today, Anastasia still works at her salon four days out of the week, and although she can be booked for six months to a year in advance, she takes it upon herself to leave open spaces for walk-in clients.

For those that aren’t of distance to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Salon, there is still good news for us. We can either purchase her products at Sephora and on her website at www.anastasia.net or we can visit an Anastasia Brow Studio in select Nordstrom Department Stores. If you do decide to purchase the product for your at home usage—which I recommend you do—a DVD 6 step tutorial can be viewed on the website to better assist you with some of the same techniques Anastasia uses at her salon.

When asked what were some of her favorite products from the collection, Anastasia gave me a list of irresistible goodies.

Precision Tweezers: Are hand made in Italy. Slanted and finer at the tip than most tweezers, it prevents breakage of the hair allowing a complete pull of the hair follicle.

Clear Brow Gel: Is the #1 selling item and does not flake or clump like other gels and lasts all day.

Perfect Brow Pencil: German made. The wax to color ratio was well constructed by Anastasia to create a natural look to the eyebrows. Not the drawn on look like some other products. It comes in six various shades from blonde to Strawburn.

Baked Highlighting Kit (Available in stores Jan 30, 2009): First ever baked brow kit. Comes with a trio of baked brow colors and highlighters and can be used wet or dry for various uses. This product as well as more to follow products is infused with Balkan Botanical ™, a product that helps promote health and quality of collagen while softening and soothing the skin.

A product that I inquired about and appears to be very useful is the BrowEnhancing Serum. For those of you like myself, due to years of getting my eyebrows razored, I have been left with under-stimulated hair areas. The Brow Enhancing Serum is for sparse brows and stimulates the hairs, triggering hair growth.

I can honestly say that I am excited to try these recommended products. Say goodbye to our salon days and hello to perfect eyebrows done courtesy by ourselves.
